Fresh Watermelon Margaritas

Is there anything more refreshing on a hot summer day than a watermelon margarita? And let me tell you, we’ve been having a lot of those this year in Western Massachusetts. Since we are all still staying in and I’ll be honest here–not a single local restaurant is good at making watermelon margaritas–I decided to whip some up and share the recipe with you. There are no artificial watermelon mixers here! Just fresh juice, premium liquor, and all-natural sweeteners.

Ingredients (makes 1 margarita):

  • 3 oz fresh watermelon juice (directions below)

  • 2 oz silver tequila

  • 1 oz fresh lime juice

  • 1/2 oz triple sec

  • 1/2 oz Monin zero-calorie natural sweetener

The amounts here are for one margarita. If you want to make more simply multiply by the number you’re making. The Monin sweetener can be found here. Feel free to sub for simple syrup, I just prefer to avoid refined sugar as much as possible. This syrup is basically an all-natural, zero-calorie simple syrup (and it doesn’t have a nasty aftertaste). It’s also great in iced coffee or tea!

Directions:

  1. If desired, rim a glass with salt.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker and drinking glass with ice.

  3. Then, measure all of the ingredients into the shaker.

  4. Shake vigorously.

  5. Strain and pour into your glass over the ice.

  6. Enjoy responsibly.

How to make fresh watermelon juice:

Using real and fresh juice makes all the difference in your cocktails. I promise it’s worth the extra couple of minutes. For watermelon juice, place cubed seedless watermelon in the blender and blend on high for about 30 seconds. How much you puree will depend on how many margaritas you’re making. I used the Vitamix with the tamper to press the watermelon into the blades. This just makes the process a lot easier. Once your watermelon is fully blended and smooth, strain through a fine-mesh sieve and discard the puree. This will keep the juice from separating in your glass when you make your margarita.
