An Afternoon at Gillette Castle

A couple of weekends ago I visited Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut. The castle was built between 1914 and 1919 with an addition completed in 1924 by William Gillette. Gillette was an American actor, manager, playwright, and stage manager and is best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage. In fact, it was his portrayal that helped create the modern image of the detective that we think of today.

The castle was designed by Gillette and has been described as being designed in a medieval gothic "American fairy tale mixed with European flair" style. Inside there are a number of oddities including secret doors and passageways, moveable tables on tracks, and doors with trick locks. You can go inside the castle for a per person charge seven days a week beginning Memorial Day Weekend. However, the State Park and grounds are open year-round from 8:00 A.M. until sunset. There are also hiking trails, a visitor center, stunning views, and concessions.
